Abstract

This will be the premiere European presentation of Dr. Miller’s 2004-2006 research utilizing brain-driven musical tones in conjunction with subject selected background music within the context of a Neurofeedback (EEG biofeedback) brain-training protocol for ADHD children.

Dr. Miller completed training two groups of 8-14 year old children in December of 2005 via an NIH mini-grant through Immaculata University.   Powerful EEG neuro-imaging technology was employed to demonstrate a normalization pattern in PRE and POST NF/Music brain-maps.

Scores from PRE and POST psychological testing also shows gains.  During their “training” sessions, subjects selected from Bach, Vivaldi, Bob Marley, Usher and other classical and popular composers, while “jamming” along with their brains via Theta-triggered midi-instrument scales in key with their musical choice.

The  QEEG brain-map assessments included typical eyes-open and eyes closed conditions, as well as conditions listening to different musical selections, and active musical improvisation on the Swiss “Hang” drum.

The Hang is well-known for it’s clear melodic tones and unique UFO-saucer like shape.

This presentation is designed to accompany a hands-on workshop where participants will experience controlling computer graphics and musical instruments with their brain waves for such purposes as increased focus, or conversely to enhance meditation.

In the workshop, we will also explore participants particular interests in physiological monitoring and self-regulation, the effects of Hang drum improvisation, vocal improvisation, biofeedback, and other topics.

This introduces fundamental principles of biofeedback and explores the use of music therapy interventions within the context of achieving skills in self-regulation of physiological response.

Primary modalities of biofeedback  covered include EMG, TEMP, EDG & EEG in conjunction with assignment of digitally sampled musical voices (e.g. strings, horns and ethereal synthesizer) to specific body functions.

Music therapy interventions covered include guided imagery to music, toning, mantra meditation, and drumming.  Application to such disorders as stress, anxiety, hypertension, back pain, migraine and attention deficit disorder will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

1. Students will gain a basic knowledge of fundamental biofeedback principles.

2. Students will gain a basic knowledge various music therapy interventions.

3. Students will gain practical experience utilizing music therapy in conjunction with biofeedback.
