“Working with emotions in Music Therapy”

As music therapists we very often work with individuals who express strong emotion, both because music is evocative of emotion, and because we encourage active self-expression as part of the process of music therapy. My recent research into the ways in which music therapists respond to client anger has revealed that there are models of response that music therapists make to their clients’ expressions of anger; and, that these models are not related to aspects such as level of education, years of experience, or even clinical orientation. Instead, these models suggest responses that are made in direct relation to an understanding of human emotional need that utilize the wonderful, inherent diversity that exists in the use of music in and as therapy. This lecture and demonstration will explore Kenny’s Field of Play as a comprehensive and indigenous theory of music therapy within which human emotion can be explored, understood, integrated, and resolved using music approaches that embrace the full spectrum of diverse theories, methods, and techniques that are all a part of current music therapy practice
